Like a Toddler — Be Yourself
you listen to your inner voice and pursue something you are curious about. Toddle about.
A number of years ago I immersed myself in the world of stand-up comedy: I attended the Funny Biz conference and watched hours of the Last Comic Standing on television.
A common thread through all the great performers was their advice to be exactly who you are.
They emphasized how important it is to let go of what you think others want to see and instead be your authentic self.
Great suggestion. But how does one shift to being truly themself? It is not as easy as changing your look by putting on a different blouse.
My suggestion is to get really curious, like a toddler. Engage with your situation the way a healthy toddler explores their world.
They carefully step out of their comfort zone to investigate something new and then retreat back to evaluate their discoveries. As adults, we too can take small but emotionally safe actions to explore what naturally sparks our curiosity.
Take my case for example. For decades I have had an inner calling to write, but my attempts left me frustrated and unfulfilled. Then in 2012 I began writing small pieces where I tried to clearly articulate only one thought at a time.
This practice allowed me to take a chance and honor my yearning, but in an emotionally safe way. Over time, I’ve become comfortable and now I more confidently express myself honestly in writing, as well as in conversations.
If you are not already doing so, I encourage you listen to your inner voice and pursue something you are curious about — toddle around.
Becoming your authentic self in the world is not quick or easy, but I’ve learned it is possible. Plus, it just feels so good! When you give yourself permission to toddle, you rekindle the joy of your inner child, the joy of just being you.
